This is still another painting based on one of my photo references from our travels in Italy. It is a pastel on toned pastel board created just recently. It is a scene I came across when prowling the narrow back streets of Venice away from the throngs of tourists. Amazingly there are many quiet spots like this in Venice as most tourists do not stray from the highlights featured in the guidebooks. The woman featured in the painting was returning from her daily trip to market. As usual the strong lighting of the situation is what attracted me to photograph and paint this subject. The quiet isolation of the woman walking alone carrying her bag of produce was also interesting within such a busy city as Venice. I was
particularly satisfied with the effect of the shadows on the brightly lit walls to the left.
